Abbey of Silvacane

From the Cistercians to classical music

In the heart of Provence, north of Aix-en-Provence, is the Cistercian Abbey of Silvacane, founded in 1144 by Saint Bernard.

The site was unwelcoming and swampy giving it its name “Silva Cana”, forest of reeds. Along with Sénanque and the Thoronet, Silvacane is a superb Cistercian abbey in Provence and it has architecture that goes with its spirituality: simple and almost austere, stripped down and functional. It exudes an atmosphere of calm and serenity, much appreciated by visitors. The State bought the abbey in 1846 allowing for its restoration and its listing as a Historical Monument.

Today it belongs to the municipality of Roque d’Anthéron which organizes prestigious concerts each year for the Festival of the Piano and the International Festival of String Quartets. These master-pieces of classical music go perfectly with the abbey and natural surroundings.
