Midway between Grenoble and Nice, in the mountains, the sanctuary of Laus-Gap is dedicated to Our Lady ever since the apparitions of the Virgin to Benoîte Rencurel.
Born in 1647 she saw the Virgin for the first time when she was 17 years old. This was the beginning of the pilgrimage of Notre Dame du Laus as well as the 54 years that the Virgin appeared to Benoîte (this being the site of the longest appearances in the world). Within 18 months 130,000 pilgrims came to pray to the Virgin. Many testimonies of healing and conversion are noted. Having first been a shepherdess, Benoîte then welcomed pilgrims for years, giving counsel and encouragement. In spite of the many people coming to this site, it was not until 2008 that the supernatural phenomena were officially recognized by Rome.
Situated in the Alpes, this sanctuary of France is in a splendid natural setting. Sanctuary of Mercy, it is a place where each pilgrim can find peace and reconciliation. Welcomed by diocesan priests and a team of lay people, one can walk in the mountains in the footsteps of Benoîte. One can also pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament near to which burns an oil lamp. This lamp is here because of what the Virgin said to Benoîte: “The oil of the lamp: if one takes some and puts it on oneself, and if one has recourse to her intercession and faith, then one will be healed.”
