Sanctuary of the cure d'Ars

Patron saint of all priests

Ars is a village situated 1 hour from Lyon and transformed by the presence of Father Jean-Marie Vianney, commonly known as the Saint Curé of Ars.

From the time of his arrival he had a lot to do! Poverty, alcoholism and futile pleasures were common. The life of and the devotion of the Father and his love of the “Good God”, as he liked to call him, transformed the life of the Ars villagers. The Curé of Ars who had such trouble learning to read and to succeed in his seminary, would see crowds of people coming to hear him preach. Ars remains today under the influence of this saint, proclaimed the patron saint of all priests in the universe by the Church in 2010.

You can pray by his shrine, visit his house, pray the divine offices with the dynamic religious community, and deepen the understanding of the message of the Saint Curé of Ars, still as current today. A seminary exists as well. It is one of the most recent and most flourishing in France. Placed under the patronage of the saint, the seminarians have time to take inspiration from the saint for their future life as a priest.

The sanctuary is of particular interest to priests, as the Curé of Ars is their patron saint, and to families as “it is they that engender saints”. Each year, on the feast day of the saint and of all priests, August 3rd and 4th, nearly 200 priests come in this sanctuary of France.

It is a world-know place of pilgrimage in France.
