The brothers of Taizé are an ecumenical community founded in 1949 by Roger Schutz, situated in Burgundy. The founder, Brother Roger, born in Switzerland, left his home country for France at the age of 25 years old. After receiving refugees during the Second World War, he was surprised to see how Christians spent so much energy justifying their differences (between Orthodox and Catholic, between Catholic and Protestant…). Then, after a long time of discernment, he founded the first community of brothers of different nationalities and different Christian confessions. The differences were seen as gifts and the occasion for testimony and reconciliation, peace and friendship lived daily in a simple life-style. On Easter Day 1949, they were seven to make the commitment together and to live their existence in celibacy, community life and a life of great simplicity. Rapidly, groups of young people, more and more numerous, began flowing in from all over Europe, and the community grew. Today there are about 100 brothers living at Taizé and others are established on five continents. The joyful songs of meditation are widely known as well as their cross in the form of a dove.
