ABBEY OF FLEURY DE SAINT BENOIT SUR LOIRE, Saint Benoît sur Loire, http://www.lumen-terra.com/img/lieux/17_Fleury_monastere_recoupe_1.png

Benedictine refinement

Between Bourges and Orleans, 170 kms south of Paris, the Benedictine Abbey of Fleury has 40 monks.

Founded in 630, on the banks of the Loire River, the community had to flee at the Revolution in 1789. The monastic community then had to wait until 1944 to be founded again by a group of Benedictine monks coming from the monastery of the Pierre-qui-Vire. In the footsteps of Saint Benedict, their spiritual father, and of Saint Anthony, who left everything to live radically the offering of his life for the love of Christ, the monks seek God in prayer and work. The religious community of Fleury specializes in making candy as well as painting on porcelain. Nearly 8 tons of candy are sold each year helping the community to meet part of its financial needs. Another particularity is the friendship with Max Jacob, the famous French poet and friend of Picasso, who came numerous times to Fleury to rest and to be a guide to visiting pilgrims. Jewish, he was deported to a concentration camp. He is buried in Saint Benoit sur Loire, as he had always wanted to be. An association of friends of the poet meets yearly at the Abbey to pay him homage.

Our pilgrimage agency in France can organize a meeting with a monk of the abbey.
