ABBEY OF SAINT MARTIN OF LIGUGE, Ligugé, http://www.lumen-terra.com/img/lieux/12_Liguge_monastere_recoupe_1.png

Heritage of Saint Martin

Situated south of the city of Poitiers, the Abbey of Ligugé has twenty monks who live faithfully by the rule of Saint Benedict.

The historical heritage of this monastery is extraordinary with Saint Martin settling here in 361 at the request of the bishop Saint Hilaire de Poitiers. It would have been after the episode of the shared coat in Amiens, but before becoming bishop of Tours where he entered into the glory of God. This Abbey had tremendous influence in the region as well as in the whole Church: In the 14th century, Pope Clement V came regularly to rest, the Abbey becoming for him like a second home.

The Benedictine brothers share their times of prayer, fraternal living, study and manual labor. The monastery has specialized in working with enamel, and the most beautiful cathedrals of France do not hesitate to place their orders with them for the reproduction of stained glass windows. A museum of the monastic life is here as well, presenting the monastic life from the 4th century to today with objects and photographs. The monks bake excellent pastries and those who love beautiful liturgies, the community records CDs.

During your Catholic pilgrimage in France, our pilgrimage agency in France can organize an encounter with a monk of the community for your group.
