MONASTERY OF NOTRE DAME DU TORRENT DE VIE, Le Thoronet, http://www.lumen-terra.com/img/lieux/26_Thoronet_monastere_recoupe_1.png

Contemplation and solitude

Midway between Marseille and Nice, the Monastery of the Torrent de Vie is a community of sisters of the Monastic Family of Bethlehem, of the Assumption of the Virgin and of Saint Bruno.

This monastic family was born on November 1, 1950 on Saint Peter’s square in Rome at the hour that the Pope proclaimed the dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin. It is in this context that several French pilgrims heard the call to give up everything in order to found new communities. Thus, in 1951 was born the first community of these sisters, then in 1976 the first community of brothers. The Monastery of the Torrent de Vie was built in 1978 at the request of the bishop of the diocese of Fréjus and Toulon. Very near to the sisters is the Romanesque Abbey of the Thoronet. It is listed with the Historical Monuments, is much visited, and no longer has any monks. The presence of the sisters of Bethlehem is of prime importance, allowing to recall the vocation of an abbey and to be sign of the Living Church in the world. Their life is contemplative, with numerous times of prayer alone; but, as said by the Fathers of the desert, “he who has God as a companion is never less alone than when his is alone.”
