Situated an hour east of Toulouse and 2 ½ hours from Lourdes, the Abbey of Saint Benoit d'EnCalcat has about 60 Benedictine brothers.
The Abbey of Saint Benoit d'EnCalcat was founded in 1890. Louis Banquet, priest, and Marie Cronier, lay person, shared great spiritual friendship. Marie felt that they were called to found monasteries together. From this intuition was born the Abbey d'EnCalcat. Very rapidlycame a flood of vocations. The two world wars would see the number of vocations decrease, only to increase as soon as the hostilities ceased. With 60 brothers today, the Abbey flourishes. The Benedictine brothers of the Abbey make zithers and an ointment made with propolis. They have a publishing house as well as a rich and varied selection of cards and postcards. The Abbey also has a workshop for stained glass which it has made for over 50 years and for which it continues to have many orders.
