The Benedictine abbey is situated in Normandy, 2 hours from Paris.
For your Catholic pilgrimage in France, come and discover the abbey of Saint-Wandrille !
The origins of the abbey go back to the 11th century. Most monasteries were founded by donations from lords. The abbey of Bec originated in the conversion of a knight, Herluin. Wishing to change his life-style, he had built the first site where he would work and pray the psalms. Other companions joined him and they adopted the rule of Saint Benedict. After a time during which the monastery flourished, the French Revolution erupted and the last monk was evicted in 1792. The State used this building as stables. It was not until 1948 that the abbey to return to its monastic life. Today, one can visit the buildings, now listed by the Historical Monuments, and assist at liturgical offices with the monks. The Abbey of Bec-Hellouin is involved in the ecumenical spirit of Christian unity especially with Anglicans. The brothers have recently begun the experience of inter-religious, monastic dialogue, allowing monks of all denominations to meet in the silence of their heart and in fraternal dialogue. In order to earn a living through their daily labor, the brothers have apottery workshop. They then sell their work in the Abbey store.
